Every now and again I am tempted to write a self-help book. I sometimes feel left out of this lucrative market where the world and its dog calls itself a life coach and feels able to advise complete strangers on how to be happier using mass generalisations and giant clichés.

My book, though, would be a short volume called Get a Grip, which I fear might not be touchy-feely enough for most people, and would undoubtedly include the advice: stop moaning, move more, and moderation is probably the key in most situations.

I feel the food book we are featuring today, Just Eat It by the nutritionist Laura Thomas, is along the lines of Get a Grip — a common-sense look at the confusing muddles and messes women often get themselves into around food. Over the years I have read thousands of words on our relationship with what we eat, almost as many as I have read on our relationship with our mothers — both of these things are laden with unnecessary guilt and take up way too much headspace. This is the perfect antidote to the ‘new year, new you’ nonsense you are likely to be bombarded by.

Whatever you’re doing, have fun in your first week of 2019!
